How to take care of a microwave oven to make it last longer

A microwave oven is one of the most convenient appliances in the kitchen.
Reheat lunch in a couple of minutes, cook porridge for breakfast or melt chocolate for dessert — we do all this in the microwave every day.

But in order for the microwave oven to serve you for many years without breakdowns and loss of power, it is important to take proper care of it.
In this article, we have compiled the most effective care tips that will prolong the life of your device.

Why is it important to take care of the microwave?

Every time food splashes inside the chamber or drops of fat remain on the walls, it imperceptibly worsens the microwave's operation.
Over time, dirt is absorbed into the coatings, reducing the effectiveness of the device, and odors spoil the taste of new dishes.

Irregular cleaning of the microwave oven can lead to:

  • The appearance of an unpleasant odor;

  • Damage to the inner coating;

  • Lowering the heating power;

  • Increased risk of breakdowns.

Important: even the most expensive and high-quality microwave oven, such as Loretto, requires regular maintenance for maximum service life.

Basic rules of microwave care

1. Clean after each use

Don't wait for the stains to dry out or for the dirt to become "permanent."
Wipe the camera with a damp cloth or a soft sponge immediately after cooking.
For persistent dirt, you can use slightly warm water with a few drops of detergent.

2. Use protective covers to warm up

Today, there are special plastic or silicone lids for heating food.
They protect the inner chamber from splashes, greatly facilitating maintenance.

Plus: these lids retain moisture in the food, and the food turns out juicier!

3. Perform regular deep cleaning

Although daily wiping helps keep things clean, it's worth doing a more thorough cleaning once every 2-4 weeks.

How to do it?

  • Pour water into a heat-resistant bowl.

  • Add the juice of half a lemon or 2 tablespoons of vinegar.

  • Put the bowl in the microwave and turn it on at maximum power for 5 minutes.

  • After switching off, leave the door closed for another 5-10 minutes so that the steam "softens" the dirt.

  • Then wipe the inside of the microwave with a soft cloth.

Bonus: lemon will remove unpleasant odors!

4. Never turn on an empty microwave.

This is the golden rule!
When the oven is idle, the microwaves are not absorbed by the food. Because of this, the magnetron, the most expensive element of a microwave oven, may fail.

Remember: even a short turn-on without food can seriously damage the equipment.

5. Monitor the condition of the turntable

The turntable is responsible for evenly heating the food.
Make sure that the table and the wheels under it are clean, without leftovers of food or debris.
Otherwise, the table will spin unevenly, and the motor may quickly fail.

Tips for caring for the outside of the microwave

  • Clean the control panel with a soft cloth, avoiding water getting into the buttons.

  • To remove fingerprints from the door, use special glass care products.

  • Wipe plastic and metal surfaces with products without abrasive particles.

Important: Avoid using aggressive cleaning products and metal sponges!
